Brian: Sure, where do you want to go?
Me: Well, we could do Street and Nye...
Brian: Ok...
Me: I'll call Pam and ask her if she wants to go.
Brian: Sounds like a plan. What's going on with the weather...
Me: Ummm, clear in the morning--few showers in the afternoon, partly cloudy
Brian: That's ok, we should be on our way out by 1 o'clock anyway....
Street and Nye in a nutshell:
4:45am--wake up, shower, make lunches, pack snacks, make breakfast
6:15am--hit the road
8:00am--Arrive at the HPIC
8:15am--last minute adjustments, potty breaks...
8:30am--hit the trail
9:30am--realize we blew by the turn-off 1.5 miles ago, head back to intersection
10:15am--reach Indian Pass Brook.
10:15am to 10:25--take off boots, socks and cross 25 foot wide brook on slippery rocks in 40 degree water
10:30am--redress feet, pee break
10:45am--arrive at swampy area, cross via a dry, de-barked downed tree, jump to dry land
11:00am--feeling in toes begins to return
11:05am--begin to feel sprinkles, don rain ponchos
11:10am--slog up one of the rockiest and muddiest trails known to mankind for the next hour or so in the rain
12:30pm--hear voices, run into other humans who tell us the "worst" is over and we are about 25 minutes from the intersection
12:35pm--rain becomes steady, wind gets windier
12:40pm--snag ponch on some blowdown
12:50pm--snag poncho on some blowdown
1:00pm--reach intersection
1:02pm--decide to head to Nye
1:10pm--Pam trips on a root and almost gives herself a trachetomy on a different root
1:15pm--reach Nye, take a picture
1:16pm--descend Nye
1:30pm--arrive at intersection, eat lunch, re-layer, remove shredded poncho
1:50pm--head to Street
2:20pm--reach the summit of Street, take a picture, take a pee break, feel like vomitting
2:30pm--descend Street
2:35pm--slip on ice and whack front teeth with trekking pole
3:00pm--arrive at intersection and begin muddy descent
3:20pm--wind and rain continue and actually get worse
3:40pm--hear thunder in the distance
3:50pm--Brian sees lightening
3:51pm--realize I'm grabbing the metal part of my trekking pole, place my hand on rubber grip
4:30pm--cross swampy area via different downed log since it is not as slippery as the first
5:00pm--reach Indian Pass Brook and decide since we can't possibly get any wetter, we might as well cross the brook in our boots.
5:20pm--hear more thunder
5:30pm--discuss with Pam that's it was too bad Nancy couldn't join us today
5:45pm--reach trailhead and sign out, grab Brian's trekking pole
5:50pm--Brian realizes he left trekking poles back at the sign in, smile and give it back to him
5:55pm--arrive at HPIC, remove drenched boots, wring out socks, hop in car and head home
9:00pm--get on-line and check out Campmor's selection of rain shells and rain pants
Summit of Nye
Notice the fashionable poncho with the matching red belt--carefully crafted from the ripped portion of the poncho.
This picture doesn't even begin to show half the mud on our legs and boots.
Summit of Street--Brian's ponch faintly resemble Swiss cheese
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I will probably not go back to Street and Nye until winter or unless the Adirondacks is in the middle of a drought.
